What to Do When Your Car Won’t Go into Gear
If your car will not go into gear, first describe exactly what is happening: is the selector stuck in Park, does the shifter move but the vehicle will not move, or is a manual transmission difficult to shift? Those are different symptoms and can require different tests. Avoid forcing the shifter or repeatedly trying to make the vehicle move.
Start with a safe stopping place
Keep the vehicle stationary, apply the parking brake and follow the operating instructions in your owner's manual. If you are in traffic or cannot secure the vehicle safely, arrange roadside help. A vehicle that cannot reliably engage a gear should be assessed before you continue driving.
If an automatic transmission is stuck in Park
Confirm that you are following the normal starting and shifting procedure for your vehicle, including pressing the brake pedal. If the selector still will not move, tell your advisor whether the engine starts, whether the brake lights operate and whether any warning messages appear.
Do not force the selector or use a shift-lock release as a repair. Release procedures are vehicle-specific and can allow the vehicle to roll. Follow the owner's manual and let a qualified technician or towing operator handle a vehicle that cannot be moved normally.
If the shifter moves but the car does not
Tell the shop which gear you selected, what the gear display shows and whether you noticed a leak, a new noise or a delay before the problem began. These details help plan the diagnosis. They do not, by themselves, establish that the entire transmission needs replacement.
Fluid-check procedures also vary by vehicle. Some automatic transmissions have no owner-accessible dipstick. Do not assume every transmission should be checked the same way or add fluid without confirming the manufacturer's procedure and specification.
If a manual transmission is difficult to shift
Note whether the difficulty occurs with the engine running, which gears are affected and whether the clutch pedal feels different. Share recent repair history and when the symptom first appeared. Avoid forcing a gear or dismantling the shifter to investigate the problem yourself.
What to tell your service advisor
- Your vehicle's year, make, model and mileage.
- Whether the engine starts and whether the shifter moves.
- Which gears are affected and whether the issue is constant or intermittent.
- Any warning lights, unusual noises, fluid leaks or recent service.
- Where the vehicle is located and whether it will arrive by tow truck.
Arrange transmission diagnostics in Colorado Springs
Read about our transmission diagnosis, repair and replacement options, then contact the shop before arranging a drop-off. Review the findings and estimate before approving repairs. Express Auto Repair does not offer fluid flushes.
Choose Galley Road, Montebello Lane or Briargate for contact details and appointment options. If the vehicle cannot be driven safely, see our towing information and confirm the destination with your advisor.
Vehicle-specific procedures: use your owner's manual. Ford's transmission-fluid guidance provides one example of a transmission without a dipstick.
