How to Preserve Your Car’s Transmission in the Winter
Cold-weather shifting concerns should be evaluated using your vehicle's operating instructions and maintenance history. Before a Colorado Springs winter, review the service schedule and address existing leaks, warning messages or changes in shifting.
Keep the specified transmission fluid
Do not switch to a different fluid simply because winter is approaching or a product is labeled synthetic. The manufacturer's specification matters. The correct fluid and service interval depend on the transmission and vehicle.
Some transmissions do not have a dipstick accessible to the owner. Ask a qualified technician to check the fluid using the correct procedure when needed. Express Auto Repair does not offer fluid flushes.
Follow the vehicle's cold-weather instructions
Read the owner's manual for starting and driving in low temperatures. Describe any new delay, harsh shift or warning to your advisor, including whether it disappears after the vehicle warms up. Do not dismiss a persistent problem as normal winter behavior.
Get help if the vehicle is stuck
Follow the owner's manual's instructions for a vehicle stuck in snow. Avoid repeatedly forcing shifts or spinning the wheels in an attempt to get free. If you cannot move safely, arrange roadside help and follow the towing requirements for your vehicle.
Use our towing information to plan transport to the correct location. Tell the operator if the vehicle has transmission problems, all-wheel drive or other special towing requirements.
Plan a transmission inspection
Bring the vehicle's service history and describe when the symptom occurs. Our team can discuss transmission diagnosis, repair and replacement, explain the findings and provide an estimate before you approve work. Ask about appointment and parts availability when planning your visit.
Choose Galley Road, Montebello Lane or Briargate for contact details and appointment options. Call your preferred shop if you are unsure the vehicle can be driven safely.
