How to Make Your Transmission Last Longer
Transmission life depends on the vehicle, its use, maintenance history and condition. You cannot guarantee a transmission's lifespan, but you can follow the correct service schedule and act on changes in operation before they become harder to address.
Follow the correct service interval
Use the maintenance schedule for your year, model and transmission. A universal 15,000-mile fluid-change recommendation is not appropriate for every vehicle. Tell your advisor about towing, heavy loads and other operating conditions so the applicable schedule can be checked.
Keep invoices showing the mileage, work performed and fluid specification. If the vehicle is used and its history is incomplete, discuss an inspection instead of guessing which service is due.
Use the specified fluid and procedure
Some transmissions have no owner-accessible dipstick. Fluid checks can require specific temperatures and equipment. Follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than using a general warm-engine dipstick procedure for every vehicle.
Use the required fluid specification and avoid unapproved additives. Express Auto Repair does not offer fluid flushes; ask your advisor about the maintenance or repair appropriate for your vehicle.
Pay attention to leaks and shifting changes
Delayed engagement, slipping, unusual noises and warning messages deserve diagnosis. Note when the symptom occurs and whether a leak appeared at the same time. Do not assume that topping off fluid fixes a leak or that a shifting complaint automatically requires replacement.
If the vehicle will not engage a gear reliably, do not force it or continue trying to drive. Contact the shop and arrange towing if needed.
Compare repair options after testing
Ask the advisor to explain the findings, recommended work, parts, labor and warranty. Visit our transmission repair and replacement page, or read how to compare repair estimates before approving the work.
Choose Galley Road, Montebello Lane or Briargate for contact details and appointment options. Call your preferred shop if you are unsure the vehicle can be driven safely.
